Old Town’s Gable building type

Among the three building types the City’s Old Town Subarea Plan names for the district is a “Gable” that “draws inspiration from traditional steeply pitched roofs of classic residential buildings.” In the City’s facade improvement grant for Old Town in 2026, “Roof Repair/Replacement” is on the ineligible list.

Roof pitch in the City’s design standards

The City’s Neighborhood Design Standards sheet lists “Minimum 6:12 pitch for the main portion of the roof” among the required elements for each new house, and says roofs with a lower pitch are acceptable if they contain “multiple roof lines, gables, dormers or other features which reduce the visual impact of the lesser pitched roof.” It also requires eaves of “a minimum of six (6) inches.” The sheet is a design standard for new residential construction, and it does not describe roofs already standing.

What shingle makers and their trade group say

Because cleaning may make a roof slippery, the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association (ARMA) encourages using professionals when someone tries to clean shingles. Only trained professionals should walk, climb or work on a roof, in ARMA’s recommendation. ARMA cautions that a pressure washer should never be used on asphalt shingles. The shingle makers GAF, Owens Corning and CertainTeed also advise against power washing asphalt shingles. ARMA adds that roof discoloration may recur.

Two Extension publications on roof moss

The statewide demossing study manual from WSU Extension says that in the Pacific Northwest “moss may become a problem on and around houses.” In an article on roof moss, Oregon State University Extension says “moss also depends on shade to thrive.” Both are general publications, not Battle Ground ones.
