A county solar array on a closed Lorton landfill

Fairfax County built a 5-megawatt solar array on 37 acres of the closed I-95 Landfill Complex, at 9850 Furnace Road, a Lorton address. In a June 2025 news item, the county called itself the first locality in Virginia to begin construction of a solar array on the grounds of a closed landfill. A county item dated June 8, 2026 says the 37 acres are serving a purpose again, and FFXnow reported on May 21, 2026 that the completed array is Fairfax County’s largest solar power project so far.

That is a utility-scale county project, a different thing from a set of panels on a house. The county has also put solar on a roof in Lorton: in 2024 its Department of Public Works and Environmental Services unveiled a rooftop system at the Newington Solid Waste Facility.
