Before and after soft washing by Clearly Amazing

Clearly Amazing soft washes siding, trim, brick, fences and other exterior surfaces in Lorton, Virginia, from our Northern Virginia office on Trade Center Place in Sterling. Soft washing relies on low pressure and a cleaning solution rather than a forceful spray, so it can clean surfaces that a pressure washer could damage. We provide free estimates on site.

A brick landmark with a Lorton address

The Workhouse Arts Center on Workhouse Way has a Lorton mailing address, though it sits in the Laurel Hill CDP. Its history page says the Occoquan Workhouse, later known as Lorton Prison, was designed from its start in 1910 to be a self-sustaining facility. The buildings that house the arts center today went up in the 1920s, built from bricks made on site. The last prisoners were transferred out in November 2001, and Fairfax County received title to the property on July 15, 2002. Fairfax County notes that the District of Columbia Workhouse and Reformatory Historic District joined the National Register in March 2006.

None of that describes the houses around Lorton. Brick is one of the surfaces soft washing handles well. Mortar joints and textured faces hold dirt, and a high-pressure stream can erode the joints; a low-pressure wash with a cleaning solution avoids that.

What collects on your siding

In a March 20, 2026 news item, the Fairfax County Health Department said that in Northern Virginia, tree pollen began in early March, with a peak forecast for April and May. Grass pollen was due to rise in late spring and early summer, and ragweed and other weeds were to follow from late summer into early fall. That was the department’s outlook for the 2026 season, not a pattern for every year.

Across the county, a 2017 i-Tree study measured 51.2 percent tree cover, with tulip tree, red maple and American beech the leading species by leaf area. It is a county-wide study and does not address algae or mildew on houses. In general terms, though, shaded walls stay damp longer after rain, and damp, shaded surfaces are where green and black growth tends to start.

What the job involves

Walk-around. We look at each surface with you, noting what it is made of and where the staining sits.

Wash. The solution and the rinse are both applied at low pressure. We soak the surrounding plants, so let us know about anything planted tight to the foundation that you want us to keep an eye on.

Photos. Should the crew notice a problem, like a cracked board, they take photos and send them to you.

Areas we cover in Lorton

We serve Lorton from Sterling, along with homes that use Lorton mailing addresses in the Laurel Hill CDP, where Occoquan Regional Park is. Homes in the Mason Neck CDP with Lorton addresses are covered as well. HOA and condo boards can ask us to quote their common areas, including building exteriors, clubhouses and pool decks.

When to schedule in Lorton

The ideal windows are late spring and early fall. Conditions are mild then, and a clean exterior carries you into the months when you’re outside most or hosting for the holidays. Other times of year are welcome for their own reasons, whether it’s a listing, a family visit, or a streaked wall you’re tired of looking at. Growth returns with time, so it makes sense to keep soft washing on a regular maintenance schedule, the same way you keep gutters clear.

Questions Lorton customers ask

Is soft washing the same as pressure washing?

No. Pressure washing uses a strong stream of water and suits hard surfaces like concrete. Soft washing uses low pressure and a cleaning solution, which is better for siding, brick, painted wood and screens.

Will the solution hurt my plants?

Surrounding plants get soaked. Point out any that need special attention while we are there for the estimate.

Can I do this myself?

A ground-level fence or a low deck is a manageable weekend project.

What insurance do you carry?

Workers’ compensation and general liability both apply. Our crews are our own employees.
