Moss and lichen on roofs, in two publications

Pacific Northwest Extension publication PNW733, on caring for wood shingle and shake roofs, says “lichens and especially mosses tend to accumulate soil and other debris on the roof.” The same publication says “Overhanging vegetation tends to shade the roof and drop debris that can accumulate and retain moisture.” Both lines are about wood roofs. A Seattle Public Utilities gardening sheet, funded through a King County program, says lichens “may colonize roofs”. Neither publication is about Bellevue in particular.

ARMA says cleaning can make a roof slippery. It adds that only trained professionals should walk or work on roofs. It also says roof discoloration may recur.
