Why a clean dryer vent matters

The National Fire Protection Association puts the yearly average at 13,820 home fires involving a dryer (2014–2018). Failure to clean was the cause of 32% of them, and in 27% the first thing to ignite was dust, fiber or lint.

Signs your dryer vent needs cleaning

  • Clothes are still damp at the end of a normal cycle, or drying takes longer than it used to (CPSC).
  • Towels and jeans take a long time to dry, or clothes feel hotter than usual at the end of the cycle (U.S. Fire Administration).
  • The flap on the outside vent doesn’t open while the dryer is running, or you can’t feel exhaust air coming out.
  • The duct behind the dryer is crushed, kinked, or made of white plastic or foil. The CPSC recommends rigid or semi-rigid metal duct instead.

California allows a much shorter duct

California doesn’t use the national 35-foot figure. Under the California Mechanical Code, as the City of San Diego’s Development Services Department explains in its residential exhaust bulletin, a 4-inch smooth metal dryer duct can run 14 feet including two 90-degree elbows, minus 2 feet for every extra elbow — unless the dryer maker’s instructions allow otherwise. The duct must be rigid metal with a smooth interior, can’t be held together with sheet metal screws that obstruct airflow, and must end outside with a backdraft damper and no lint screen. A flexible connector behind the dryer can be no longer than 6 feet and can’t be hidden inside a wall.

What San Diego Fire-Rescue recommends

San Diego Fire-Rescue’s dryer safety sheet says to clean lint out of the vent pipe once a year, to make sure the outdoor flap opens when the dryer runs, and to use rigid or flexible metal venting. It also puts it plainly: the leading cause of home dryer fires is failure to clean them.
