Before and after gutter cleaning by Clearly Amazing

Clearly Amazing handles gutter cleaning in San Diego, working out of our office on Opportunity Road. Leaves and debris come out of the gutters and are bagged, and we dispose of them. Downspouts get cleared and flushed too. Should the crew spot a problem along the way, such as a gutter pulling away from the house or a disconnected downspout, they’ll take pictures and send them to you. The estimate is free and done at your house.

What the City says about your gutters

The City of San Diego’s rain gutter guide puts the job of a gutter simply: gutters protect your roof and foundation by diverting rainwater away from them. The same guide defines gutter maintenance as removing debris so rainwater can flow and repairing leaks when necessary.

The guide’s numbers show how much water a gutter is asked to move. A 5-inch K-style gutter holds 1.2 gallons of water per foot, and every inch of rain that falls on 1,000 square feet of roof adds up to 625 gallons.

The City’s Think Blue stormwater program makes the same point from the other direction. “Clean Roof Gutters” is one of its eight ways to reduce pollution, with the advice to clear gutters of debris so water can flow smoothly. The same list asks residents not to sweep leaves into the street or a storm drain, and to put yard clippings in the appropriate waste containers instead.

Your downspouts and where they point

A downspout decides where all that roof water lands. The City’s older downspout guidelines, an FY2018 document, note that many homes have downspouts that send rooftop runoff straight to the storm drain system, and recommend directing it to a landscaped area where it can soak into the ground without flooding or erosion. Where algae or moss is a problem on paving, UC’s statewide pest-management guidance suggests redirecting downspout water away from concrete and other hard surfaces.

The County of San Diego’s Vector Control Program adds a reason to keep the whole run clear. It advises cleaning leaves and other debris out of gutters regularly and warns that even a quarter inch of water at the bottom of a drain or pipe can become a place for mosquitoes to breed.

If your home is in a Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone

For homes in the City’s designated wildland-urban interface (Very High Fire Hazard Severity) areas, the Zone 0 section of the San Diego Municipal Code, §512.0604(e), lists keeping the roof and rain gutters clear of leaves and needles. Zone 0 is the five feet around a structure. San Diego Fire-Rescue’s defensible-space guide links to the City’s Very High Fire Severity Zone page, so you can check whether your address is inside one.

UC Agriculture and Natural Resources makes a similar point in its statewide wildfire mitigation guide. Leaves and pine needles can build up in gutters, especially from nearby or overhanging trees, and the guide advises cleaning debris out on a regular basis whatever the gutter is made of.

When to schedule gutter cleaning in San Diego

At San Diego International Airport, NOAA’s 1991–2020 normals add up to 9.79 inches of rain a year, and 8.10 of those inches fall from November through March; February is the wettest month at 2.20 inches. The ideal time for a cleaning is October, before that stretch begins, so the gutters are clear when the first real rain arrives.

Other months are fine too. A spring cleaning after the rains clears whatever the winter storms left behind, and a house going on the market or a gutter spilling over at a corner are both good reasons to book whenever they come up. Gutters fill again year after year, so treat this as part of the house’s regular upkeep.

Common questions about gutter and downspout cleaning

Are downspouts part of the job?

Yes. Clearing and flushing the downspouts is included, along with the gutters themselves.

Where does the debris go?

It’s bagged during the cleaning, and we dispose of it.

Can gutter guards replace regular cleaning?

The City’s rain gutter guide recommends guards to reduce the leaves and other material clogging a gutter. UC’s wildfire guide says properly installed and maintained guards can reduce the need to clean, but some products can let debris collect on the roof behind the gutter, and guards should be inspected regularly.

Are your crews insured?

Yes. Each crew has general liability and workers’ comp coverage, and a certificate of insurance can be sent if you want one.
