What the Murrayhill guidelines say about gutters

The Murrayhill Owners Association posts its Design Guidelines online, and the 2023 edition says “All gutters and downspouts must be designed as a continuous architectural design feature.” They add that “Exposed gutters and downspouts must be colored to blend in with the surface to which they are attached.”

Both sentences are about how gutters look, and they are Murrayhill’s rules for Murrayhill alone. The guidelines are silent on cleaning gutters. Whether a given Beaverton address falls inside a community is for its association to say.

Oregon State University on gutters

An Oregon State University Extension guide to wood shingle and shake roofs, published in January 2020 and reviewed in 2024, says “Failure to maintain clean gutters can result in water backups that extend to the lowest course of the roof.” The guide is about wood roofs and about the Pacific Northwest generally, so it is not a statement about Beaverton or about other roof types.

A separate OSU Extension article on annual home inspections, published in January 2025, has a checklist line reading “Gutters and downspouts: Inspect during rain or snowmelt for leaks or breaks.” That is an inspection tip, and OSU does not name a company.

Detached houses, per the Census

The Census Bureau’s 2024 five-year figures put Beaverton at 17,942 detached one-unit homes, 41.9 percent of its 42,771 housing units.
