What Oregon State says moss does to a roof

An OSU Extension Service article from February 2023, reviewed in 2025, calls roof moss “inevitable” in the moist Pacific Northwest, and says moss clinging to shingles can lead to “costly repairs or replacements.” OSU’s Solve Pest Problems moss entry, updated May 28, 2026, adds that moss growth, over time, “slows or prevents water flow off the roof.” This is regional guidance, not a statement about Damascus roofs.

The schoolhouse roof, per its nomination

In the nomination for the 1876 Damascus School, work done in 1968 is described this way: “A new cedar shingle roof was placed over the original roof cover”. It describes one roof and says nothing about any other.

Roof cleaning across Damascus

We clean roofs throughout Damascus. The U.S. Geological Survey’s place-name listings include Borges Butte, Deardorff Butte and Pleasant Butte, along with Damascus Heights and Sunshine Valley. A February 9, 2026 Metro story says “In August, Metro acquired almost 20 acres in Damascus on the slopes of the region’s East Buttes,” and describes the purchase as linking Metro’s Sunshine Butte and East Bliss Butte natural areas.
