What the shingle trade group says

ARMA, the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association, is the trade group for asphalt roofing manufacturers, and it says never to use a pressure washer on a shingle roof. Power washing shingles is something GAF, CertainTeed and Owens Corning advise against. Walking, climbing or working on a roof is something ARMA recommends leaving to trained professionals. ARMA also encourages the use of professionals for cleaning, because cleaning may make a roof slippery.

Roof rules in downtown Hyannis

The Town’s zoning for the Downtown Hyannis Zoning Districts, in an October 2023 archived copy, says “Pitched roofs with a slope greater than 12:12 require a special permit.” That is a building-design rule for those districts.

The Old King’s Highway committee north of the Mid-Cape Highway

The Town’s page for the Old King’s Highway Historic District Committee calls the regional district “the area north of Route 6 (the Mid Cape Highway) from Sandwich to Orleans”. It says the committee “reviews applications for any change in the exterior of buildings and structures, fences and signs”. The page does not mention cleaning.
