Getting your lights up before the downtown tree lighting
Hometown Holidays is the evening Camas starts the season. The City of Camas Parks & Recreation hosts it downtown on the First Friday in December, with the Downtown Camas Association as a sponsor: the tree lighting, photos with Santa, choirs, cocoa and, courtesy of the Association, artificial snow. In 2026 it runs from 5 to 8 p.m. on December 4.
If you want your house lit that night, the practical move is to book in September or October. The calendar fills from the top, and October gives you the most dry working days. NOAA’s Portland–Troutdale Airport station puts over 80% of the year’s rain in October through April, with December the wettest month at about 6 inches.
Later bookings are completely normal, and we install right through December. Plenty of people decide to host after Thanksgiving, or just decide this is the year. A wet roofline is a reason to take more care with ladders and clips, not a reason to say no. A house lit on December 15 is lit for the part of the season that matters most.

What winter near the Gorge does to lights
Camas sits near the western mouth of the Columbia River Gorge, and in the cool season cold air from east of the Cascades pushes out through the Gorge as strong east winds. Freezing rain is more common near the Gorge than north or south of it. In January 2024, back-to-back storms brought freezing wind, ice and snow to Camas.
For holiday lights, the risks are wind, ice and water in the connections, not heavy snow. That is why we attach with clips fitted to the edge they sit on, whether gutter lip, shingle edge or trim, and use weather-rated connections. On an exposed lot that takes the east wind, attachment is the part of the job we spend the most time on.
How we light your house
Walk it with you in daylight. We measure the rooflines, count the peaks and returns, find the outlets and agree on what gets lit. In Camas it is worth asking who actually sees the house. A home on the south side of Prune Hill can be seen from a long way off, while a bungalow on a narrow street near downtown is seen up close from the sidewalk, and the design should suit that.
Build it to fit. The lights are cut to your measurements, so each run ends where the roof ends instead of doubling back or leaving a dark gap. Clips are chosen for the edge they sit on, and nothing gets nailed or screwed into your house. On the older painted trim around downtown and Crown Park, that matters even more. On a hillside lot, we work out where the truck parks and where the ladders go before install day.
Keep it running, then take it down. If a strand or section goes dark during the season, call us and we come back out to it. After the holidays we take everything down, pack it and store it, so it is not sitting in your garage or left on the roof until spring.

Areas we cover in Camas
All of Camas, including Prune Hill, Lacamas Shores, Holly Hills, Grass Valley, Forest Home, Deer Creek, Crown Park and the streets around downtown. We also serve Vancouver, Washougal, Battle Ground, Ridgefield and La Center.
We light businesses too. Downtown Camas on NE 4th Avenue is a historic brick main street, largely rebuilt after the 1923 fire, and storefronts that want to look their best for Hometown Holidays and the rest of the season should book early to get the install date they want.
When to schedule in Camas
Call in September or early October, and install in October or the first half of November. That gives you the best weather and the widest choice of dates. You do not have to turn the lights on early. Many people have them installed in October and leave them off until Thanksgiving week or the night of the downtown tree lighting.
Four things help when you call:
- How tall the house is and what the roof does. Peaks, dormers and returns are what the quote is based on.
- Where your outdoor outlets are and whether they work.
- What you want lit besides the roofline: trees, porch columns, railings, a wreath over the door.
- Any HOA rules. Camas has a lot of neighborhood and homeowners associations, and yours may have guidelines on timing or style. It is easier to check in September than in December.
November and December bookings are welcome all season. Late is not worse. It just means fewer dates to choose from.
Questions Camas customers ask
Can you have my lights up for Hometown Holidays?
Yes, if you book early. This year it is Friday, December 4. The earlier you are on the schedule, the more say you have in the install date.
Will the lights hold up in an east wind storm?
That is what professional-grade product and proper clips are for. The weak points in a Camas winter are connections and attachments, so that is where we spend the time at install. If a section does go dark during the season, call and we come back out to it.
Can you light trees and more than the roofline?
Yes. Trees, porch columns, railings, garland and wreaths can all be part of the design.
Why not do it myself?
On a single-story house with a helper and a dry Saturday, many people do. But hanging lights means ladders on wet ground in short daylight, and on a two-story Camas hillside house that is a real risk. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission estimates more than 164,000 emergency-room-treated ladder injuries a year.
Are you insured?
Yes. Every crew carries general liability and workers’ compensation.
