What WSU Extension says about moss and algae

WSU Extension’s demossing manual calls moss, lichens and algae plants that “are highly successful in cool, damp climates”, and says western Washington suits them: “Washington, west of the Cascade Mountains, provides just such a climate”. It places moss on “roofs, patios, sidewalks, and steps” that are little used and stay wet for long stretches, and says it “grows vigorously” in fall, winter and spring. About algae, the manual says the pale green film “characteristic of homeowner algae problems” is produced by “thousands or millions of algae cells.” Those are regional statements, and the manual is a licensing study guide for pesticide applicators.

A Master Gardener article on roofing and moss

An article by WSU Extension’s Skagit County Master Gardeners, “Myths About Moss” (February 14, 2014), reports that “roofing professionals say that growth of moss rhizoids into tiny cracks in the roofing materials, accelerates their degradation and eventually causes leaks.” The article goes on to talk about cedar shingles, so wood roofs are part of what it is describing.

The City has a Holmes Point Drive Corridor Study, and part of Holmes Point Drive NE is outside the city limits.
