A rooftop array at Spring Hill Rec Center

A Fairfax County Park Authority release dated April 25, 2024 said Spring Hill Rec Center, at 1239 Spring Hill Road in McLean, had activated a 307-kilowatt solar photovoltaic array installed on its natatorium and gymnasium roofs. The release called it the largest to date in the Park Authority. The county’s release of May 8, 2025 on a Department of Energy award lists “Addition of 307 kW rooftop solar photovoltaics” among the center’s retrofit work.

A neighborhood association’s Environmental Community Day

The Chesterbrook Woods Citizens Association calls itself a voluntary association of the Chesterbrook Woods neighborhood in McLean. Its Environmental Committee held an Environmental Community Day on the morning of Saturday, August 22, 2026, and its August 6, 2026 post on the event said attendees could learn more about “solar installation including battery storage.” The recap post called it a great morning “learning about home efficiency, checking out solar and battery storage.”

What one association’s guidelines say about panels on a roof

The Architectural Guidelines and Standards of the McLean Crest Homeowners Association, Version 2, dated June 14, 2023, say panels may go on a roof only if they are either “not readily visible from the private or public-streets and thoroughfares” or “architecturally designed for and compatible with the house design.” An owner “must submit an application to the ARB and receive written approval from the ARB before contracting for or installation of any solar panels.” The document says the ARB will review solar panel applications subject to Code of Virginia §55.1-1820.1. Its solar panel specifications section reads, “To be developed in future version and in compliance with Code of Virginia §55.1-1820.1.” Those lines are about installing panels, in that one community.

What the county says

Fairfax County’s Land Development Services calls for a residential solar permit on roof-mounted and free-standing projects. The county’s design guidelines for the Langley Fork historic overlay district, labelled a January 2026 Final Draft, have no solar section.
