Holiday Lighting Installation in McLean, VA

McLean is a Census-designated place in Fairfax County, and it is not one of the county’s three incorporated towns. Crews for McLean’s holiday lighting, at homes and at businesses, head out from our Northern Virginia office in Sterling. Light Up McLean, the Community Center’s house contest

The McLean Community Center’s event page lists the Light Up McLean! Holiday House Decorating Contest, with the contest and voting running December 21, 2026 through January 3, 2027. The page names three categories: Best Overall, Most Creative/Original and Best Holiday Theme. The Center says it was built, and is funded, by residents of Greater McLean through a real estate tax surcharge.

The Center’s release of February 5, 2024 said ten families took part in the 2023 contest, which ran December 18, 2023 through January 2, 2024, and that 1,000 residents voted. The Fairfax County Times wrote on December 22, 2023 that the contest began in 2020, when people were practicing social distancing, that judging should happen from the street, and that voters did not need to live in McLean. The Center’s December 2024 calendar listed contest voting for December 23, 2024 through January 5, 2025. The contest is the Center’s, and none of it is ours.

The downtown calendar, as its organizers list it

McLean Revitalization Corporation lists the 2026 McLean Winterfest Parade & Block Party for Sunday, December 6, 2026, from 12:30 to 4:30 pm. The block party runs alongside the parade route in Langley Shopping Center, the parade begins at Fleetwood Road and Old Chain Bridge Road at 1:30 pm, and a Santa Claus station opens at the block party at 3 pm. The page calls Winterfest its annual winter celebration. Its listing for the 2025 edition, on Sunday, December 7, 2025, from 2:30 to 7:30 pm at the McLean Community Center, named the Downtown McLean Christmas Tree Lighting among its parts.

The Community Center lists its Holiday Art & Crafts Festival, a three-day indoor juried show of 80 regional artisans, for December 4 through 6, 2026, at 1234 Ingleside Avenue. The listing gives Friday and Saturday as 10 am to 6 pm and Sunday as 10 am to 4 pm, and it says the Northern Virginia Handcrafters Guild manages the show.

Organizers can change dates, and none of these events is ours.

Luminaria on the neighborhood streets

Light Up Chesterbrook is a neighborhood event whose luminaria are candles. Its own site gave Saturday, December 13, 2025, with a rain date of Sunday, December 14, for Chesterbrook Woods, Chain Bridge Forest and Potomac Hills, and says that in 2024 about 300 homes put out over 10,000 candles and raised more than $4,000 for local charities. The Chesterbrook Woods Citizens Association wrote on September 26, 2025 that the event would be back for a sixth year, and that it began in 2020 as a way to bring the neighborhood together during the pandemic.

The McLean Hamlet Community Association describes McLean Hamlet as a community of 507 homes built between 1965 and 1995. Its About page names a Winter Festival of Lights (Luminaria).

Rules that belong to one community or district

McLean Hamlet’s Architectural Control Committee page says exterior changes must receive committee review and approval before work begins, and that each section of the community has its own set of rules. That page does not mention holiday decorations.

The Langley Fork Historic Overlay District covers approximately 71 acres around the junction of Georgetown Pike and Chain Bridge Road, and it is in McLean. The county’s design guidelines for the district are labelled a January 2026 Final Draft. They say Architectural Review Board review is only required for work that requires a permit, and their text does not mention holiday, Christmas or seasonal displays, though it has a section on adding new lighting to the landscape.

Of those, an estimated 14,358 are detached one-unit homes (80.5 percent), 1,744 are attached one-unit homes (9.8 percent), 1,673 are in buildings of five or more units (9.4 percent), and the other 58 (0.3 percent) are in buildings of two to four units or are mobile homes. The same estimates put 14,757 of the 17,147 occupied units in owner occupancy (86.1 percent), and the median year built for the housing units at 1977.

Install. Installs run through December. Each run is cut to the rooflines and clipped on, with no nail or screw in the house.

Repair and takedown. When part of the display goes dark before the season is over, a crew comes back to repair that part. When the season closes, the takedown falls to us and the lights are stored.
