Overflow, streaks and a worn drip line

The Northern Virginia Soil and Water Conservation District, on a page hosted by Fairfax County, lists gutters that need to be cleaned or are undersized among the sources of wetness or erosion near a home’s foundation walls and drip line. The district says that kind of wetness or erosion can be very damaging. It also puts the volume in perspective: when it rains hard, an average-sized home can send hundreds of gallons of runoff off its roof.

You can check for signs of overflow yourself. The district suggests inspecting the outside of the gutters and downspouts for streaks or watermarks, and looking for erosion along the drip line. Its advice is to clean gutters free of debris at least once a year, and more often if you have trees close to your house. The same page notes that installing gutter guards can help reduce how often cleaning is needed.

Your downspouts, extensions and rain barrels

Fairfax County’s flood-readiness page tells residents to clean home gutters regularly, especially during leaf fall season. It also says each downspout should have an extension hose reaching at least 5 feet from the foundation, and that downspout water shouldn’t be directed onto neighboring properties.

Virginia Cooperative Extension’s homeowner fact sheet on rooftop redirection, sometimes called disconnection, gives this maintenance advice for a redirected downspout set-up: use screens or clean the gutters regularly so leaves and debris don’t clog them and restrict the flow.

If you collect roof water in a rain barrel, Extension’s rain-barrel maintenance advice is to check the gutters, downspout, barrel spigot and outflow for clogs, especially in the fall when leaves are falling and in spring when pollen is heavy.

What the job involves

Inspect

The crew goes along the gutters and downspouts checking for holes, disconnected downspouts and any stretch that has separated from the house. If they find a problem, they photograph it and share the pictures with you.

Clear

Leaves and whatever else has settled in the gutters are scooped out and bagged, the downspouts are cleared, and we dispose of the debris.

Flush

Water is run through the gutters and downspouts to check for any blockage still hiding in the system.

When to book gutter cleaning in Northern Virginia

Our pick for the main cleaning is late fall, once the trees near your house have let go of their leaves, so that load is out of the gutters before winter. Any other time is a good time to call if there’s a reason: water sheeting over the edge in a downpour, a streak down the outside of a gutter, or simply wanting a spring check. Plan on it as part of the house’s regular upkeep, like servicing the heat pump.
