Oregon State University on algae and siding

Oregon State University’s Solve Pest Problems entry on mold in homes and structures, revised June 30, 2022, lists “moist surfaces such as vinyl siding and wooden decks” among the places algae grows outdoors. It also names “shady locations such as the north side of buildings.” The university’s moss entry, updated May 28, 2026, mentions “walls, sidewalks, and patios.” These are guides for the Pacific Northwest as a whole, so they are not about Milwaukie in particular, and they name no company.

One downtown landmark, in the City’s and Restore Oregon’s words

The City’s Engage Milwaukie page on its historic city hall records, in a February 1, 2024 update, that the parties were “ensuring that the historic façade remains in perpetuity”. The adopted project goal is “A project that maintains the historic character-defining features of the exterior of the building façade.” Restore Oregon describes the building as a “wood frame structure with brick veneer”. Those are the City’s and Restore Oregon’s words about one building. They are not about cleaning, and they are not about us.

For properties in the Historic Preservation Overlay Zone, the City’s FAQ on the building says exterior alterations get reviewed by the city. The City’s Historic Resources & Preservation page, archived in August 2026, adds that Planning Department review covers most exterior alterations to “Significant” resources, and it is silent on cleaning. The City is the one to say which properties are on its list.

According to the Census Bureau’s 2024 five-year estimates, Milwaukie has 9,859 housing units and a median year built of 1968. Units built in 2000 or later number about 669 (6.8 percent), those from 1980 through 1999 about 2,090 (21.2 percent), and those before 1980 about 7,100 (72.0 percent). A build-year count cannot tell you what a house wears on its walls or how old that cladding is.
