One community’s line on roofs

Among the initial use restrictions in Cedar Creek’s CC&Rs, posted on the City’s site, is that roofs “must be finished with materials approved for use by the PIC,” the review committee the document names. That covers Cedar Creek only.

Moss on roofs, in two Extension publications

WSU Extension’s statewide demossing manual says moss “often causes problems on roofs, patios, sidewalks, and steps that are infrequently used and which remain wet for extended periods of time.” Oregon State University Extension’s article on roof moss says “moss also depends on shade to thrive.” Neither publication is about Ridgefield.

What asphalt shingle makers say

The Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association (ARMA) cautions against ever using a pressure washer on asphalt shingles. Shingle makers Owens Corning, CertainTeed and GAF also advise against power washing asphalt shingles. ARMA notes that cleaning may make a roof slippery and encourages using professionals when attempting to clean shingles. ARMA considers walking, climbing or working on a roof dangerous and recommends that only trained professionals do so. ARMA also says roof discoloration may recur.
