What the City’s code lists for exteriors

For new duplexes, triplexes, townhouses and multifamily buildings, Ridgefield’s code says building exteriors “shall be constructed from quality and durable materials such as stone, brick, wooden lap siding, fiber cement siding, or similar materials.” It bars mirrored glass, corrugated siding, exposed concrete block, plywood and T-111 on those exteriors. For new single-family homes, the design standards give builders a menu of features that includes “Fiber-cement horizontal lap siding between three and seven inches wide,” along with brick, stone or cedar accents. Those are rules for new construction, not a description of the homes already standing, and none of them mentions cleaning.

Materials named in the City’s downtown guidelines

A section on building materials in the City’s downtown design guidelines from 2004 says “There are four primary materials that are historically appropriate for Ridgefield: stone, brick, stucco, and wood.” The same section names City Hall, on Pioneer Street, as a building that uses both stone and brick, and offers it as an example to learn from when designing a new downtown project. The guidelines are design guidance for new projects downtown, and they do not mention cleaning.

One community’s siding list

Cedar Creek’s CC&Rs, posted on the City’s site, list “Different paint colors and/or different types of siding” among the options in their initial residential design guidelines approved by the City. That is a rule about variety in new homes, in one community, and it does not mention cleaning.
