Solar panels in the Maywood Historic District
Maywood’s design guidelines list “installation of solar panels on historic buildings” among the changes that need a certificate of appropriateness. An administrative, staff-level certificate covers panels on new construction or additions to historic buildings, on new or non-historic accessory buildings, and on existing non-historic additions. Panels reviewed at staff level must be mounted no more than six inches above the surface of the roof and have a low profile. Ground-mounted arrays go to the review board case by case, and the guidelines call them unlikely because of the size of the typical lot and the number of trees in the historic district. The same guidelines say solar installations need permits from the county’s inspection services division, and they say nothing about maintaining or cleaning panels. All of this concerns Maywood only.

Arlington County’s Solar Permit page says residential solar electric systems require both an electrical permit and a building permit, and that for single-family and townhome applications the installer needs proper state electrical licensing. Those are rules for installing a system.
