What Arlington’s organizers have listed for this season

The Rosslyn BID lists Rosslyn Cheer 2026: Light the Plaza for Thursday, December 3, 2026, from 5 to 7 pm at Central Place Plaza, 1800 N Lynn St, with a 24-foot holiday tree, festive music, raffles and a cash bar. Its page for the 2025 edition gave Thursday, December 4, 2025, at the same plaza.

In Ballston, the BID lists the Ballston Holiday Market, formerly known as the Singing Tree Market, for Friday, December 11, 2026, from 3 to 7 pm at Welburn Square, 901 N Taylor Street, and calls it an annual holiday celebration. The 2026 listing does not say whether the tree will be lit. ARLnow’s November 28, 2023 preview said the singing tree in Welburn Square would be adorned with 1,200 “interactive, sound responsive” lights.

The Clarendon Alliance’s Light Up Clarendon page shows no 2026 date as of September 30, 2026. The same page shows a Thursday-night event on December 11 at Clarendon Metro Park, with Santa photos, caroling by the Arlington Chorale and a holiday market. December 11 falls on a Friday in 2026, so that text is not a 2026 date. The page also describes the celebration as running from Thanksgiving through mid-January.

Two earlier ones, for the record. ARLnow’s December 3, 2024 preview of the Village at Shirlington’s tree lighting listed Thursday, December 5, 2024, with horse-drawn carriage rides and photos with Santa. ARLnow’s 2025 roundup listed Miracle on 23rd Street, at 750 23rd Street South in Aurora Highlands, for Friday, December 5, 2025, with a holiday market and a snowball fight.

We read these pages on September 30, 2026, and organizers change dates. None of these events is ours. If you would rather look at lights than hang them, the county’s visitors’ office names Douglas Park, Glencarlyn and Madison Manor among the Arlington neighborhoods that tend to go all out.

A house, a townhouse or a building

According to the Census Bureau’s 2024 five-year estimates, Arlington County has 121,970 housing units, and buildings with five or more units hold 61.5 percent of them. A call about lights here can come from someone who owns a house, someone who owns a townhouse, or someone who manages a building.

On the house side, the Census Bureau’s 2024 five-year estimates count 39,332 occupied one-unit homes, detached and attached together. The largest group, 16,685 or 42.4 percent, was built between 1940 and 1959, and 60.0 percent were built before 1960.

If your property has rules of its own

Maywood is one of Arlington’s local historic districts, designated on July 7, 1990. Its design guidelines say that accessories such as exterior lights, house numbers and mailboxes do not require a Certificate of Appropriateness, but should get careful consideration when replacements are chosen. The guidelines do not mention holiday lights, Christmas or seasonal displays, so they do not say either way. The county’s historic preservation staff can answer for your address.

Fairlington Villages Condominium Association publishes a decorations policy for its limited and shared common areas. Its February 2024 resident handbook carries a revised version. Both say the shared-area approval form is not required for decorations displayed in accordance with the policy exclusively from November 15 to January 15, and that decorations on the exterior surface of windows, such as wreaths, are permitted from November 15 through January 15 only. Both limit decorative attachments on a backyard fence or gate to the interior, and, in that fence-and-gate section, say electrical installations (lights, etc.) must follow the applicable building codes and association bylaws. Those are one association’s rules for its own common areas, and it can revise them.

After the season

Arlington’s Holiday Recycling Guide lists holiday lights among the items to keep out of the recycling cart.

The county’s Christmas Tree Collection page lists curbside pickup for Monday, January 5 through Friday, January 16, 2026, for trees set out with all decorations, nails and stands removed. For residents without regular curbside pickup, including those in townhomes, apartments and condominiums, it names the Earth Products Yard in Shirlington, by weekday appointment.

What the job involves

Look. The free on-site estimate comes first.

Hang. The LED goes up cut to the roofline and held by clips. Nothing is nailed or screwed in. Installs run through December.

Stay lit. If part of a run goes dark before the season ends, a crew returns to repair it. Takedown after the season is ours too.

Timing an Arlington install

The ideal time to call is ahead of the first evening you want the house lit. That way the install is on the calendar before the date matters. Later calls are welcome too. A house that goes up in mid-December is lit for everything left of the season, with the same mid-season repairs and takedown.
