Why a clean dryer vent matters

Dryers were involved in an estimated 13,820 home structure fires a year from 2014 to 2018, according to the National Fire Protection Association, causing an average of seven deaths, 344 injuries and $233 million in property damage each year. The leading cause, at 32%, was a failure to clean.

Signs your dryer vent needs cleaning

  • Clothes are still damp at the end of a normal cycle, or drying takes longer than it used to (CPSC).
  • Towels and jeans take a long time to dry, or clothes feel hotter than usual at the end of the cycle (U.S. Fire Administration).
  • The flap on the outside vent doesn’t open while the dryer is running, or you can’t feel exhaust air coming out.
  • The duct behind the dryer is crushed, kinked, or made of white plastic or foil. The CPSC recommends rigid or semi-rigid metal duct instead.

Ohio and Kentucky duct rules

On the Ohio side, the Residential Code of Ohio follows the national model for dryer exhaust: a 4-inch metal duct that ends outside the house with a backdraft damper and no screen, screws that stick no more than 1/8 inch into the duct, and a run capped at 35 feet minus an allowance for each elbow. Across the river, the Kentucky Residential Code adds an exception: a 4-inch PVC or CPVC dryer duct is allowed, but only below a slab-on-grade floor.

Why length and bends matter: the U.S. Fire Administration notes that in a long vent with many turns, moisture from the exhaust condenses on the duct walls and attracts lint.

How often to clean it

The National Fire Protection Association recommends cleaning the lint filter before or after every load and cleaning lint out of the vent pipe once a year. The CPSC adds that a qualified service person should clean the inside of the dryer periodically, since lint collects there too.
