Why Ohio Valley arrays lose output faster than the brochures suggest
Panel output degrades with soiling, and the Ohio Valley is a harder environment for that than the national averages assume. Three local factors compound:
- Agricultural and construction dust. Prevailing westerlies carry fine
- Pollen, then tree litter. Heavy spring oak and maple pollen binds into a
- Freeze-thaw cycling. Cincinnati crosses freezing and back dozens of
The pattern that matters: rain does not clean panels. Rain lifts loose material and leaves the bonded layer, then dries mineral deposits on top of it. Arrays that have never been cleaned typically show their loss gradually enough that owners attribute it to panel age rather than soiling.
What we do, and what we don’t
We clean and inspect. Deionised water, soft brushes, no detergents and no abrasives — the two things that void most panel warranties are harsh chemicals and pressure washing. We don’t use either on glass.
While we’re on the array we check and report on what we can see: soiling patterns that suggest a drainage or tilt issue, bird nesting under the panel line, visible cabling damage, cracked or delaminated cells, and vegetation that has grown into the shading path.
We don’t repair or service the electrical system. No inverter work, no wiring, no panel replacement, no warranty claims. If our inspection finds something that needs an electrician or your installer, we tell you what we saw and you take it to them. We’d rather be clear about that here than after you’ve called.
Bird nesting under panels — the Cincinnati-specific one
Roof-mounted arrays create a sheltered cavity that starlings and pigeons treat as prime nesting ground, and this region has plenty of both. Nesting material under the panel line blocks airflow — which raises cell temperature and cuts output — and the accumulated droppings are acidic enough to damage the frame and roof surface underneath.
We flag nesting during cleaning. Mesh exclusion around the array perimeter is the usual remedy, and it’s far cheaper before a colony establishes than after.
How often, and when
Most Cincinnati arrays benefit from cleaning twice a year: once in late spring after the pollen has finished dropping, and once in late autumn after leaf fall but before hard freezes set in.
Arrays that need more attention: those near agricultural land or active construction, those under overhanging trees, those at a shallow tilt — below roughly 10 degrees, soiling doesn’t shed with rain and accumulates continuously — and any array with a history of bird activity.

Questions Cincinnati customers ask
Doesn’t rain clean my panels? No. Rain removes loose debris and leaves the bonded layer behind, then dries mineral deposits on top. Arrays that rely on rain alone tend to hold a persistent haze that only shows up in the generation figures.
Will cleaning void my warranty? Not the way we do it. Most panel warranties are voided by pressure washing and harsh chemicals. We use deionised water and soft brushes, no detergents. If you have specific manufacturer requirements, tell us and we’ll work to them.
Can you tell me how much output I’ll get back? Not honestly, no — it depends entirely on how soiled the array is and how much of the loss is soiling rather than age or shading. What we can do is inspect first and tell you whether cleaning is likely to be worth it for your array before you commit.
Do you clean ground-mounted arrays? Yes, and they’re usually simpler and quicker than roof-mounted.
