The strands are LED, professional grade, in white or multicolor, and they are cut to fit the roofline and fastened with clips. The lights are leased by the season. They are ours, and between seasons they sit in our storage.

What the Town’s holiday page listed for a Herndon December
The Town’s Hometown Holidays page listed a free Holiday Tree Lighting and Sing-Along at Town Hall Square on Saturday, December 6, 2025, from 5 to 6:30 pm. The same Saturday carried the Herndon Homes Tour, listed from 10 am to 4 pm and described as a tour of Herndon homes decorated for the holidays. The Holiday Arts and Crafts Show, with more than 80 vendors, was listed for Sunday, December 7 at the Herndon Community Center. On December 13, the page listed the Herndon WinterMarkt in Downtown Herndon, described as bringing “the Old World charm of Christmas in Europe” to Herndon.
The tree lighting on Town Hall Square was not new that year. Connection Newspapers reported that the Herndon Chamber of Commerce presented the 2022 lighting on Saturday evening, December 3, with 14 sponsors, the Mayor counting down and the Herndon High School Band playing.
Those are past events, not a schedule. We have not confirmed dates for this year, so the Town’s holiday page is the place to look before you plan around one. If there is a date you want the house lit for, tell us when you call.
Inside the Historic District, what the Town’s guide lists
The Town’s Historic District Property Modifications Reference Guide, last updated August 15, 2024, has an entry for light fixtures. For street-facing locations it lists a staff-approved certificate of appropriateness, and it gives separate entries for the side and rear of a building. The entry is titled only “Light fixtures.” The guide does not list temporary or seasonal lighting, and it says it “does not constitute a complete list of all possible property improvements.”
Whether holiday lights are exempt or need approval is not ours to call. The guide is silent on them, and the answer for your address is the Town’s to give. The guide names [email protected] as the contact for the district. Both the guide and the review belong to the Town of Herndon, not to Fairfax County, and they apply only to properties inside the Historic District.

What the job involves
Plan. At the free on-site estimate we look over the roofline and the gutter edge and mark where the runs will go.
Hang. Each LED strand is fastened with clips only. Nothing is nailed or screwed in. Weather-rated connections join the runs, and installs continue through December.
Keep it lit. If a strand or section dies partway through the season, we come back for a mid-season repair. When the holidays end, the takedown is ours, and the lights go into storage.

Where is the tree lighting held?
The Town’s holiday page listed it on Town Hall Square on December 6, 2025, and the Herndon Chamber of Commerce presented the 2022 lighting on the same square on December 3. We have not confirmed this year’s date, so check the Town’s holiday page.
Do I buy the lights?
No. They are leased for the season, and after takedown they go back into our storage.
Can you light a storefront in Downtown Herndon?
Yes. Businesses are part of what we light, alongside homes.
What if a section stops working?
