The first weekend of December downtown

The City’s tourism site lists Historic Manassas, Inc.’s Holiday Market for Friday, December 4, 2026, from 4 to 8 PM in the Manassas Train Depot parking lot. In that listing, Santa arrives by VRE train at 6:19 PM and the tree-lighting ceremony follows at 6:30 PM.

The next morning, Saturday, December 5, the 80th Greater Manassas Christmas Parade starts at 10 AM. Its listing on the City’s tourism site has the route running from Mathis Avenue onto Sudley Road, along Prescott Avenue and Center Street through Historic Downtown, and onto Peabody Street, ending near the Courthouse. Those dates and times come from the listings, so check with the organizers, Historic Manassas, Inc. and the Greater Manassas Christmas Parade, before you plan around either one.

The weekend has a track record. In 2025 the tree lighting was part of Santa Lights Manassas on Friday, December 5, which its listing described as a tradition of more than 30 years. Potomac Local News wrote ahead of the 2025 parade that it typically draws more than 10,000 spectators.

If your house is in a historic overlay district

The City of Manassas has three Historic Overlay Districts. The largest is the Manassas Local Historic District: over 300 structures across roughly 2.5 square miles, the traditional downtown plus many of the neighborhoods around it. The City’s brochure for the districts tells anyone who lives, runs a business or owns property in one that exterior alterations or a new construction project may need approval from the Architectural Review Board. The City’s 2022 Historic District Design Guidelines do not mention holiday lighting, so how review applies to seasonal lights is a question for the City rather than for us. If your address is inside a district, Planning & Development is the office to ask. The Architectural Review Board’s review covers only addresses inside the districts.

What the job involves

Estimate. We come out to the house or building, look at the rooflines, and work out where each strand starts and stops. The estimate is free.

Install. Clips are the only fastener, and the professional-grade LED runs are joined with weather-rated connections.

Repairs and takedown. Should a strand or section go dark partway through the season, a crew returns to fix it. Once the season is over we take the lights down and store them, so there is nothing for you to box up.

Can I string lights myself?
Some people do. Prince William County Department of Fire & Rescue’s December 2023 holiday-decorating advisory says to use lights that are UL approved, and notes that some are made for outdoor use and some for indoor use. That is a County advisory; the City of Manassas has its own Fire & Rescue Department.
