Before and after gutter cleaning by Clearly Amazing

Our Sterling office sends crews to clean gutters for homes and businesses in McLean, Virginia. This page sets out what a few documents say about gutters and about water leaving a lot. Each speaks only for its own community, district or county department.

Three documents on water leaving a lot

In Version 2 of its Architectural Guidelines and Standards, dated June 14, 2023, the McLean Crest Homeowners Association includes this sentence: “Gutters and downspouts must match existing gutters and downspouts in both color and design and must not adversely affect drainage on adjacent properties.” It is that community’s wording.

The McLean Hamlet Community Association’s Architectural Control Committee publishes guidelines for reviewing exterior modifications and new homes, headed “As of August, 2019.” Under “Drainage,” they say a proposed grading plan “must be included with every application to construct a new home, which the ACC will review to assess and adjust, if necessary, to avoid drainage onto other properties.” That passage concerns grading plans for new homes, and the document has no text on gutters.

Fairfax County’s Department of Public Works and Environmental Services raises the same subject in its Stormwater FAQs. In an answer headed “Who Do I Call About: Private Drainage and Erosion Issues,” the page says that drainage directed from gutters, downspouts or other private systems to neighboring properties, in its words, “is a civil matter between the property owners.” None of the three passages mentions cleaning.

Gutters on a painting list and a no-review list

Trim, as defined in the exterior-painting resolution of January 16, 2020 from the McLean Mews Homeowners’ Association’s board, includes “front door trim, gutters, and downspouts.” That definition belongs to a painting resolution.

Fairfax County’s Langley Fork guidelines, written for a historic overlay district that they place in McLean, carry a January 2026 Final Draft label. A list headed “Projects That Do Not Require Review and Permit Approval by the ARB” includes “Gutters,” and the guidelines tie ARB review to work that requires a permit. The list concerns review of projects in that district alone.

Fairfax County’s gutter advice, from three departments

Three county departments mention gutters on pages that do not name McLean. The Department of Public Works and Environmental Services’ “Be Flood Ready and Resilient” page, under “Reduce Flood Risk on Your Property,” says: “Clean home gutters regularly, especially during leaf fall season.”

The Health Department’s “Get Rid of Standing Water” page, part of its advice on controlling mosquitoes, lists “Roof gutters” and “Downspout extensions” among “places that can hold standing water.”

The Department of Code Compliance’s “Code Compliance Corner” dated September 1, 2026, which is about rodents, gives recommendations that, in its words, “can help reduce the chances that rodents will come onto your property or into your home.” One reads: “Reduce standing water by keeping gutters unclogged and following other recommendations of the Northern Virginia Soil and Water Conservation District.” Each of the three is that department’s own wording, offered to residents as advice.

An environmental day in Chesterbrook Woods

The Chesterbrook Woods Citizens Association describes itself as a voluntary association for its neighborhood in McLean. On Saturday, August 22, 2026, its Environmental Committee held a neighborhood Environmental Community Day. The association’s August 6 post, addressed to residents, listed “Talk to county reps about tree and rainwater management programs” among the day’s offerings, and its August 25 recap says those who walked down one street had a chance to see “rainwater management,” among other topics, on a single property. Neither post mentions gutters or downspouts.
