Roof moss in Oregon State’s words

Oregon State University Extension’s roof-moss article, titled “How to control roof moss and prevent long-term damage,” was published in February 2023 and reviewed in 2025. It says that on roofs in the moist Pacific Northwest, moss is, in its word, “inevitable”. That is regional guidance, not a statement about Gresham roofs, and it names no company.

What the shingle makers and their trade group say

Asphalt shingle makers have a trade group, the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association (ARMA), and it says a shingle roof should never see a pressure washer. Three of the makers, GAF, CertainTeed and Owens Corning, advise against power washing the shingles. Because cleaning may make a roof slippery, ARMA encourages the use of professionals for cleaning shingles. Only trained professionals, it adds, should walk or work on a roof. ARMA adds that discoloration may recur.
