Materials named in the downtown design guidelines

The La Center Downtown Design Plan and Guidelines, adopted on May 25, 2005, say “Materials such as masonry, stone, stucco, and wood are encouraged.” For wood siding, the guidelines say it “must be bevel, shingle siding, or channel siding and must not be applied in a diagonal or herringbone pattern.” Both lines are in the guidelines’ building design section, and the guidelines do not mention cleaning.

Siding rules in the code and in one HOA

The downtown commercial (C-1) standards in La Center’s code, as reproduced in the City’s 2025 draft code update, say “T1-11 style siding is not permitted” for new construction. Heritage Ridge’s improvement application, posted in 2021, has a “Paint/Repaint Siding” item and a “Siding” item footnoted “LAP siding required on all sides, no T1-11 Is allowed.” Those are rules for new downtown construction and for one HOA, and neither source mentions cleaning.

From City Hall to the post office

La Center City Hall is at 210 East 4th Street, and the La Center Historical Museum is at 410 West 5th Street. The post office is at 421 Northeast John Storm Avenue, and La Center Middle School is on Northeast Lockwood Creek Road.
