A county of pavement and streams

Arlington County’s Streams page says roughly 42 percent of the county’s land has been converted to impervious surfaces such as roads, sidewalks and buildings, and that development has significantly affected the nearly 33 miles of perennial streams.

Arlington has no incorporated towns or cities inside it, so the county government is the local authority.

If your house is in Maywood

Maywood is one of Arlington’s local historic districts. The district’s design guidelines, in the version with administrative revisions approved March 21, 2020, list “exterior sandblasting” among the work that needs a certificate of appropriateness, along with painting previously unpainted brick or removing paint from masonry. The guidelines do not use the words pressure washing, power washing or cleaning, so on washing itself they are silent. That applies to Maywood alone, and it is not a statement about any other Arlington neighborhood.
