The canopy above your street
Arlington’s countywide tree canopy measured 31.7 percent in 2014, 33.3 percent in 2018 and 35.2 percent in 2023. The county’s goal is to reestablish and maintain at least 40 percent canopy countywide. Those figures describe the whole county; how much tree reaches over a particular roof is something to judge on site.

The trees over your gutters
A complete street tree inventory in 2003 put Arlington’s street trees at an estimated 20,355. The five species with the highest counts were willow oak at 11 percent, red maple at 10 percent, Japanese zelkova at 6 percent, pin oak at 5 percent and Callery pear at 4 percent. Oaks as a group made up approximately 30 percent of the street trees that year.
That inventory is more than two decades old, so read it as a snapshot of the street trees at the time, not a count of what is growing over your house today. Street trees are also only part of the picture, because trees in yards can reach over a roof just as easily.
Whatever the species, leaves, seeds, acorns, twigs and flower parts all find their way into a gutter beneath a tree. The finest material settles to the bottom of the trough and holds water there, though the surface of the gutter can look fine from the yard.

When to schedule in Arlington
At Reagan National Airport, 1991–2020 NOAA normals total 41.82 inches of precipitation a year, and July is the wettest month at 4.33 inches. Gutters carry water in every season.
Late fall, after the leaves have come down, is the natural time for the main cleaning, so the system heads into winter clear. Spring suits a second visit, to catch the seeds and flowers the trees overhead drop. Any other month works as well, and the day you notice water spilling over the edge in a storm is a good day to call. Ongoing care keeps each cleaning routine.
Questions Arlington customers ask
How often should my gutters be cleaned?
At least once a year, and more often when trees hang directly over the roof. We can look at what is overhead during the estimate and suggest a schedule.
Do gutter guards help?
They reduce what gets in, but small seeds, grit and leaf fragments still collect on top of them or slip underneath. A guarded gutter needs less frequent attention, not none.
Can I do this myself?
On a one-story section with level footing, some homeowners do.
What happens to the debris?
It is bagged, and we dispose of it.
