Downtown Fairfax in December

The City of Fairfax’s events directory lists its Festival of Lights and Carols for Saturday, December 5, 2026, from 12 to 6 PM at Old Town Square, 10415 North Street. Admission is free, photos with Santa run from 3 to 5 PM, and the Tree Lighting Ceremony with caroling is set for 5:30 PM. The City’s page describes the day as Downtown Fairfax “aglow with sparkling tree lights and festive cheer.”

The City’s Holiday Market page carries the title “10th Annual Holiday Market (Dec. 4-6, 11-13)” and says the market runs during the first two weekends of December in Downtown Fairfax. Old Town Square sits next to the historic Old Town Hall in the heart of Old Town Fairfax, and the City’s parks page names the Festival of Lights and Carols among the events held there.

If your property is in one of the City’s overlay districts

The City has a Board of Architectural Review, and its information sheet lists “Lighting” among the kinds of projects that can need review. Inside the Old Town Fairfax Historic Overlay District, single-family homeowners need architectural approval to change the appearance of a home or property, and for commercial property the sheet says any change to appearance anywhere in the City requires approval. The sheet does not say whether temporary holiday lights count. For a property in the historic district or a commercial property, that is a question for the City’s Department of Community Development and Planning.

The City’s Design Guidelines speak to lighting in its overlay districts rather than across the whole City. They say colored lighting “should generally not be used outside of temporary seasonal displays,” which makes seasonal displays the stated exception. The site-lighting sections also say not to attach lighting “in any way that will damage living elements such as trees or shrubs.” Those are the City’s guidelines for building and site lighting inside its overlay districts. They are not a holiday-lighting ordinance, and they do not describe how we work.

Estimate. We come to the property and look over the rooflines. The estimate visit is free.

Install. Clips hold everything up, and the LED strands connect through weather-rated fittings.

Repairs and takedown. A dark strand or section in the middle of the season brings us back for a repair. When the season ends, the lights come down and go into storage with us.
