Before and after pressure washing by Clearly Amazing

The City of Falls Church’s page on its completed Downtown Reinvestment project lists “pressure washing the sidewalk along West Broad Street” among the ways the project improved the look of the Downtown area. The page marks the project complete. For homes and businesses inside the City, Clearly Amazing pressure washes driveways, walkways, patios and other hard surfaces, working from our Northern Virginia office in Sterling.

Brick, concrete and the City’s sidewalk standards

On North Washington Street, the same project replaced concrete sidewalk with brick pavers. The City’s Streetscape Design Standards for Commercial Streets, adopted in March 2017 and amended in May 2025, call brick pavers “an attractive, durable material” and say sidewalks on Commercial Great Streets, Civic Great Streets and Connecting Streets “should use the standard brick banding around concrete sidewalks.” Those standards are written for the City’s commercial streets.

What the City counts as a hard surface

The City’s stormwater utility fee is set by impervious area, and its Stormwater Utility Fund page says the fee “is based on the amount of impervious surface (e.g. roof, driveway, walkway, and patio) your site has.” The same page’s list of what counts includes “Concrete driveways / walkways / stairs / patios” and “Rooftops of homes.” Its sample calculation counts 1,100 square feet for a roof, 750 for a driveway, 300 for a patio and 100 for a walkway, or 2,250 square feet of impervious area in all.

The Property Maintenance Code and commercial driveways

Section 33-4 of the City’s Property Maintenance Code says: “All private sidewalks, driveways and parking areas on commercial properties shall be kept in a proper state of repair and maintained free of major cracks, holes or dislodged pavers.” The sentence is about repair and applies to commercial properties. It does not mention washing or cleaning.

Masonry in the City’s design guidelines

In their masonry section, the City’s Design Guidelines of December 2001 include the lines “Never sandblast any masonry” and “Avoid high-pressure washes of masonry.” The chapter for historic buildings says its guidelines are intended to guide the rehabilitation of properties zoned for the City’s historic overlay, and that they may also help owners of other properties who are rehabilitating in a historically accurate manner. The overlay itself reaches structures built as residences during or before 1910 and structures the City has designated.

Which side of the line your address is on

The projects, standards and Code sections above belong to the City of Falls Church, which became an independent city in 1948. The City’s Address Finder offers Merrifield, Seven Corners and Bailey’s Crossroads as examples of Falls Church mailing addresses that sit in Fairfax County.
